A gang of at least seven heavily armed robbers on Wednesday stormed some banks within Babcock University, Ogun State, carting away with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The robbers attacked both Oceanic [now Ecobank] and WEMA bank situated within the premisis of Babcock University, shooting sporadically to scare people away.
Eye witnesses say that the dare-devil robbers were armed with sub-machine guns, rocket launchers and dynamites.
“It is an unbelievable experience, I don’t know how the boys came in. They carried big rocket launchers and dynamite. Before anyone knew what was happening, they swooped on us and asked all of us to lie down. One of them even slapped me because I wanted to look at his face. I cannot say the actual amount they carted away, but a rough estimate will be millions of naira,” A staff of one of the affected bank said.
The sporadic gun shots caused panic among students who made frantic efforts to get across to their parents on phone.
Meanwhile the head of the Technical Department in Babcock University, Mr Dotun Oduroye, emphasized that no student was hit by stray bullets, contrary to rumours making rounds that some students were shot.
“the robbers came in about an hour ago and they were with sophisticated weapons like dynamites and rockets. They were shooting in the air and two banks, Oceanic and WEMA banks were attacked. None of the students was hit by the bullet, it was only the shock that gripped many of them. But we thank God that it was just a shock.” Mr. Dotun said.
The Sagamu Divisional Police Headquarters via a source confirmed the attack to news correspondents saying that the police were on the trail of the fleeing robbers.
