Again, Chinua Achebe Rejects Nigerian Award

Just as he did some years ago, Professor Chinua Achebe, Nigerian literary giant has again rejected the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic, CFR.
The award would have been conferred on him alongside about 360 other awardees in different categories at a ceremony scheduled for next Monday, 14 November.
The writer is the second nominee that is turning down the National Honours award. Femi Gbajabiamila, the Minority leader of the House of Representatives, had earlier written President Goodluck Jonathan to indicate his rejection of the award of Order of the Federation (OFR) to be conferred on him. The lawmaker had queried the criteria used in nominating recipeints for the 2011 National Honours. Gbajabiamila argued in the letter to the President that national awards should be only be conferred on those who have made concrete contributions to the development of the country, unlike now, when it is being indiscriminately doled out as presidential favours.
However, In a short statement he issued today to indicate that he will not be available to be conferred with the award next Monday,  Achebe  said he is rejecting the award because the condition that made him do so seven years ago still exist in the country today.
“The reasons for rejecting the offer when it was first made have not been addressed let alone solved. It is inappropriate to offer it again to me. I must therefore regretfully decline the offer again,” Achebe said in the letter which he reportedly sent to Nigeria Ambassador to the United States.
Achebe had in 2004 rejected offer of national award from the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in protest of the political situation in Nigeria and his native Anambra State then.
The US based writer had in the rejection letter he wrote to the then President noted that: “I write this letter with a very heavy heart. For some time now I have watched events in Nigeria with alarm and dismay. I have watched particularly the chaos in my own state of Anambra where a small clique of renegades, openly boasting its connections in high places, seems determined to turn my homeland into a bankrupt and lawless fiefdom.  I am appalled by the brazenness of this clique and the silence, if not connivance, of the Presidency.
“Forty three years ago, at the first anniversary of Nigeria’s independence I was given the first Nigerian National Trophy for Literature. In 1979, I received two further honours – the Nigerian National Order of Merit and the Order of the Federal Republic – and in 1999 the first National Creativity Award.
“I accepted all these honours fully aware that Nigeria was not perfect; but I had a strong belief that we would outgrow our shortcomings under leaders committed to uniting our diverse peoples.  Nigeria’s condition today under your watch is, however, too dangerous for silence. I must register my disappointment and protest by declining to accept the high honour awarded me in the 2004 Honours List”.

What will you do if you have just been delivered of a baby and the police storm the hospital hours thereafter and seize the baby?
Cry? Kick? Resist? Action predictable. This is exactly what Mrs. Gloria Musa, a native of Umuahia, Abia State, and married to Mr. Musa from Garkida, Adamawa State but lives in Haringey, United Kingdom (UK) did after she had just been delivered of a baby and the police invaded Norwich Park Hospital and took away the baby. Three months earlier, the same police, allegedly acting at the behest of the Haringey social service, had equally seized five children of the Musas on the grounds that the mother was a sex worker.

Why D'Banj didn't go to Channel O Awards

The Channel O Awards is taking place tonight and our very own Koko master will be getting two awards. Most gifted artist and a Special Recognition Award. Unfortunately D'banj won't be there to receive the award...he's not in SA, he's in Nigeria.

I hear D'Banj and his crew planned to storm the award, where he was also billed to perform, but on getting to the airport yesterday to travel to SA, they discovered that the Channel O Awards organisers had gotten him an economy ticket, instead of at least a business class ticket, which I guess he's accustomed to. So he and his crew turned back

But the two parties are saying it was mostly a communication break down...D'Banj had been placed on a wait list for a business class ticket but the flights were fully booked for days etc etc...

So since he won't be there live, the Channel O people went to his Lekki home to record an acceptance speech which will be aired during the show when his award is announced....

I would have managed the Economy flight ticket if i was in D'banj's Shoes at least i was going to be honoured...But I guess his just an Oliver Twist

D'banj To Be Honored At Channel O Music Awards 2011

Popular Hip-Hop musician Dapo Oyebanjo, also known as D’banj is to be honoured at the forthcoming 2011 CHANNEL O MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS, organizers have announced. The Entertainer will be given a Special Recognition award on Friday, November 11, 2011, during the awards ceremony.
With the recent news, D’banj follows in the footsteps of past winners K’Naan, Brenda Fassie and George Lee in 2010, 2009 and 2008 respectively.
D’banj, who co-hosted the awards show alongside DJ Sbu back in 2007, has shown impressive qualities as an African artiste in his six-year musical journey. He has released three solo albums ‘No long thing’ (2005), ‘Rundown Funk U Up’ (2006), ‘The Entertainer’ (2008) and the anticipation for his fourth –  ‘Mr Endowed’ increases by the day.
His hard work led to the recent international record deal signing with US rapper Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music earlier this year.
It’s really an honour for us to be celebrating an artist such as D’Banj for this year’s Special Recognition Award. Besides the obvious success that D’Banj has had, one of the stand-out factors is that his career, his success and his path run parallel with the growth that we have seen in the African music industry since the inception of the Channel O Music Video Awards. To us he represents a breed of African urban artists who are the African dream’, says Leslie ‘Lee’ Kasumba, Channel O Africa Manager.
As announced earlier, the awards show will be hosted by Nigerian R&B singer Banky W and South African O-Access presenter Dineo Moeketsi and broadcast live on Channel O from the Sandton Convention Centre.
